Chronicle of the hotel
Gasthof Zur Kapelle
in Nonnenhorn.
A very long time ago.
But still good.
Built in 1803 by Georg Köberle, the house came into the possession of Jakob Witzigmann, the great-grandfather of the current family, in 1891 after many eventful years. Even back then, the “chapel” was a popular destination for “summer visitors”, as the first holidaymakers were called.

After investing in a fruit and wine trade using the new railroad, difficult years followed in the wake of the First World War. The early death of his son Karl as his successor presented his wife Maria with great challenges.

With diligence and her cooking skills, Maria survived all the turbulence until her son Hermann returned from captivity as a prisoner of war in 1947. He took over the inn, modernized and expanded it over the years.

During the Second World War, Nonnenhorn was spared from bombing due to a lack of industry and was able to retain its character in the post-war years. The village’s rural and agricultural character can still be seen today. With a great deal of commitment, the estate was transformed into a modern business, which is now run by Sonja and Hans-Jörg Witzigmann. The house, with its striking façade, is now a popular vacation hotel and is known for its excellent cuisine. The regulars’ table, a detail of which is shown above, with its original carvings, tells us about good and difficult times and many cozy evenings in the “Kapelle”.
